Starting Sept. 1, and until some definitive information on
budget matters is forthcoming, no music people should work
on the AI system without expectation of having to pay the
bill in REAL money. CCRMA may possibly have some money
available for work at the AI lab, thanks to the SDF grant,
but I don't know what this will amount to. In any case,
each person should speak to John Chowning about individual
funding. If I get the funds I have requested from the H&S Dean
there may be some small amount for student use.
As an economy measure, the MS library will be removed
from [DAT,LCS] on Sept. 1. I hope to be able to incorporate
most of this library directly into the MS program - but
this may not happen right away. Meanwhile you should make
a DART tape of everything on [DAT,LCS] and read it onto your
disk area each time you work with MS. This amounts to about
70 blocks, so these files should not be left over night
unless you want to pay c.$1.10 per day for storage.
Also you should always use the PACKMS program to compact
all your MS files. This saves at least 50% on storage
space. Whenever possible, do all your work on UDPs.
There should be a little space on some of the MUSIC packs,
although, after some three years, the UDPs are still cluttered
up with tons of stuff that will never be used.
You should run CHARGES to get an idea of how much it
will be costing you to work at SAIL. MS will eventually be
running at CCRMA - but don't hold your breath. Past
cooperation and activity on this has been minimal and in
view of the current hardware activities at CCRMA I doubt
that anything will be accomplished before the end of the year.
